Древното Говедо | Българско Сиво (Искърско) Говедо
In this episode we'll see one of the oldest cattle breeds in Europe! Its resilience and endurance has led to survival of the breed after centuries of harsh history. This is Bulgarian Gray cattle!!!
The breed originated from Bulgaria. In its veins flows the blood of the shorthorn (Bos Taurus Brachyceros) and the longhorn cattle (Bos Taurus Primigenius).
It's been used for meat, draught and milk in the past. Nowadays its use has been reduced just to meat production. This is justified only for areas with poor conditions in terms of weather, soil and altitude. Such kind of places are last habitat for primitive breeds like the Gray cattle breed. Here, ontop of Balkan mountain, this tough medium sized breed feels like home.
Hair coat is gray, with shades of dark to light gray, rarely yellowish. Bulls have darker coloured front part of the body, sometimes reaching to black. The muzzle, mucous membranes and hooves are black. The horns are gray-white at the base, with black tip and regular lyre-shape. With its duration of use up to 17 years, high fertility and easy calving, Bulgarian Gray cattle can thrive for more years to come.
