Despite its great resemblance to cattle, the buffalo is not a member of the genus Bos. The buffalo is believed to have been domesticated 7000-8000 years ago by the wild river buffalo, which is now found only in eastern India. The buffalo is distributed in tropical, subtropical and partly temperate regions. A number of buffalo breeds have been created to improve the productive qualities of animals. More than 1000 years ago, domesticated buffaloes were widespread in Bulgaria. At the end of the 20th century, Murrah bulls were imported from India and crossed with the Local Mediterranean Buffalo. This is how the Bulgarian Murrah breed was formed, which has improved qualities compared to the original breed. Buffaloes are not demanding on feed, they are resistant to diseases, but they are sensitive to temperature changes. They spend hot days in rivers and swamps, where they cool off and find rest from insects. They have much better performance than cattle in rugged swampy warm and humid areas. Buffalo milk is more nutritious than cow's milk, with a fat content of up to 9%. The meat of young fattened buffaloes is also superior in nutrition to beef. The head is high when moving, the hooves are wide. The hair on the back and neck is directed forward. The mucous membranes are dark. The haircoat is black. The muzzle, hooves, horns and udder are also black. Displaced by cattle, today the buffalo is threatened with extinction.
