Local, autochthonous, aboriginal, these are the breeds of antiquity. Without organization and without direction, the native people has created local breeds, some of which are believed to be direct descendants of wild cattle. Local breeds are at the heart of all other breeds in the world and carry invaluable genetic potential. Two local breeds of cattle have been preserved in Bulgaria, but are still endangered. The first one is the Rhodope shorthorn cattle. It belongs to a group of short-horned cattle that is believed to have originated in Asia. Typical features are the shape and proportions of the skull with thin brittle horns and small stature. Color is not decisive. Ideal for mountain conditions. In all other areas the Bulgarian gray cattle ruled. It belongs to the Podolian group of gray cattle. It is reported to have originated from short-horned and long-horned cattle. Gray color, lyre-shaped horns and larger stature predominate. As a breed with many applications and wide distribution, the Gray cattle also served as a basis for improved breeds. This is one of the reasons that led to his own disappearance from the Bulgarian fields.
