Best carp rig: New twist on the classic hair rig + why it’s SO effective
Here’s why the (modernised) knotless knot is still the best all round carp rig.

I’ve added a little twist to the classic hair rig design to improve its performance and I use it with a very effective running lead.
In this tutorial, I revisit an all time classic that has been around for 30 years: the mono hair rig. I’ve been fishing various versions of this rig for the last 3 years and I’ve learnt a lot about it. It may look very simple but there are some tiny little details that are so important to get right. I’ve added a little element to it which enhances its performance and I’ve caught some amazing specimens from a variety of waters while I’ve been testing it.

It’s a true all-round carp rig: you can use it on a variety of bottom types, with bottom baits, snowmen, wafters or popups and the stiffness of the mono gives it good anti tangle properties. Because the mono is semi stiff, it will resist the attention of many nuisance species such as bream and poisson chat. It’s naturally anti tangle and will always be ready for when a big carp arrives on the scene. It doesn't matter whether you're targeting wily carp in a small estate lake, wild carp on massive lakes or carp in flowing water. You can literally take this rig anywhere.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been carp fishing for 30 years, you need this rig in your fishing. Not only will I show you exactly why it is so effective, I’ll show you how to get the best out of it. In the second half of the video, I show you how to create a simple, safe and highly effective running lead setup.
Here is what I use to tie this rig:
20lb mono (you can use any mono from 15lb - 25lbs)
Korda run rig rubber
Hair stop
2oz swivel lead
Chod style hook
Size 8 ring swivel
Tungsten rig tubing
Hook beads suitable for a size 6 hook
15mm bottom baits
