Good news for daf students and music lovers. This video, a production by Hapa Drums, is a collection of the Daf (the Kurdish/Persian) Maghams and the common rhythmic patterns played on this drum. This awe-inspiring drum is considered a sacred instrument among the sufis and it’s been played in khaneghahs (house of sufis) for many centuries. In the past, it used to be played in religious gatherings, rituals and ceremonies of the sufis, but today it is used to accompany melodic instruments and music ensembles of many different genres and it’s been introduced worldwide. Similar frame drums to daf exist throughout Asia and the Middle East. The repetitive patterns, and the rattling sound produced by a wide set of rings, attached to the frame (behind the drumhead) of this instrument, played in the spiritual gatherings has a trance inducing effect and leads the soul to the state of ecstasy. Some segments of this video were posted online on different social media platforms in the past, but finally, here is a complete version for educational purposes, performed by one of today’s leading players, Negar Ezazi.
